Shagreen and Parchment are leathers that were popularized during the Art Deco and French Moderne era for furniture application. Parchment is an ancient material, one of the earliest ways to preserve hides and it creates luminous, luxurious surfaces. Shagreen has been used historically in high end luxury objects.

FAQs

  • Parchment has been made for centuries, and is usually calf, goat, or sheep skin.

  • Shagreen is traditionally the tanned and processed skin of sting ray or shark. However modern shagreen is more sustainable and is sourced from Skate also known as whip ray which is a by product of the sushi and fish market.

  • While parchment often has multiple coats of clear or tinted finish built over it, we still recommend avoiding contact with moisture and treating the surface as you would any fine wood surface. Shagreen is porous and so care should be taken to avoid spills or liquids that might stain any kind of leather.

  • Various products can be made with parchment and/or shagreen. A few of our best sellers are our Cubist, Gazelle and Ellipse Series. If you would like a quote for a custom piece, submit a quote request specifying your material choice.
